Frequently Asked Questions
What is Rocky Mountain Youth Flag Football?
Every NFL Flag football league is affiliated and partnered with a local youth flag football organization. Rocky Mountain Youth Flag Football is Calgary’s startup flag football organization that will be bringing you the NFL experience. Coupling all of the knowledge, expertise, experience and resources of the NFL, with that of local representatives, makes this the perfect partnership to implement such an amazing opportunity, right here in Calgary!
What age groups and divisions will be offered?
NFL Flag Calgary is offering flag football for both girls and boys aged 6-16 years old. All teams will be co-ed teams.
Divisions will be setup by age and they will be as follows:
Age: 6-7
Age: 8-9
Age: 10-11
Age: 12-13
Age: 14-16
Your division eligibility is based on the age you turn during the current calendar year.
NFL Flag Calgary reserves the right to move a player up or down 1 division, depending on number of registrants in each. For example, sometimes we expand the age 8-9 division to 8-10. There is also some overlap of 12 year olds, with some playing in the 10-12 and some in the 12-13. All of this is done to even out team numbers in each age division, but still done on the basis of ability levels, regardless of age.
When does the NFL Flag season take place?
Spring Season: Early May – Late June
Fall Season: Early September – Early October
Practices and games will take place mainly on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Occasional weekday games added. Exact dates and times are always released closer to the start of the season, after teams have been made.
Where will games take place?
Games will take place in the south end of Calgary, primarily at New Brighton Athletic Park. Each team will usually have a game or practice event at McMahon Stadium every season.
How much is it to register and is there a refund policy?
The early bird cost to register is $295+GST and this price is in effect until March 1st. After March 1st, pricing for the season increases to $315+GST. Final registration ends on April 10th, 2025 or when spots are fully filled. A waiting list is created if registration maxes out.
REFUND POLICY: Refunds that are requested before the end of the registration time period, will be returned, less a $25 administration fee. If a refund is requested after registration has ended, fees will be returned, less a $75 fee as jerseys and other equipment specific to each child, will have already been ordered. Refunds can be granted up to 7 days before the start of the regular season. There will be no refunds issued after that time.
How many games/practices will kids receive?
Each season consists of 8-9 officially scheduled games. There is also an introductory outing to allow players, coaches and parents to meet, hand out jerseys, get oriented and have a first practice together. Game day outings will be approximately 1.5 hours in length. They will consist of a 30 minute skill development practice to start, followed by a game against other teams that has two 25 minute halves, with a 5 minute halftime.
What does my child receive with their paid registration?
Each child receives and gets to keep their own officially licensed NFL performance jersey from one of 32 NFL teams. Each child will get to use and keep their own NFL Flag pop socket belt. An NFL Flag keepsake(medal, trophy or ring), will also be given to each child at season’s end.

Who will the coaches be?
All coaches will be parent/family volunteers from each team. There is nobody out there that will take the care and time to help guide and nurture a safe, fun, exciting learning environment, than the parents of children on the team. There will be live, in person clinics offered, as well as NFL Flag issued training videos, documents, apps and other resources, to help guide parent volunteers in a seamless, productive, un-intimidating way. All of these will provide clear, well laid out, easy to follow practice and gameplay strategies, skill development drills and activities, that will allow coaches to hit the ground running successfully from day one. Much can be learned from the comfort of your own home. A league representative will also be available to answer any questions via email, phone call or in-person conversation.
Who will be refereeing games?
All referees will consist of trained and paid individuals, who have a passion and interest for the game of flag football. Many will be players that have or currently play in the league. They offer the best experience and knowledge of our league rules and game-flow, due to having played themselves.
How many players will be on a team and on the field at one time during game play?
Teams will consist of 9 or 10 players. We generally cap teams at 10, to help maximize playing time. All NFL Flag games will consist of 5 players on offense vs. 5 players on defense, on the field at one time.
What positions do players play in NFL Flag?
The offense will consist of a quarterback, a center, and 3 wide receivers. The center can receive the ball after snapping it to the quarterback. Any player can be used as a running back, if the play calls for it. The quarterback cannot run past the line of scrimmage.
All players will have the opportunity to try playing all positions. This is part of the fun of NFL Flag! However, players will eventually settle into favourite/best-fit positions and want to play where they are most comfortable.
The defense will also consist of 5 players, that will be made up of defensive backs, safety’s and a rusher. More details on these positions are explained further inside the rules section.
What are the rules of NFL Flag Football?
Detailed rules of how the game is played can be found on our Rules page, located in the website menu. The rules of NFL Flag will be followed, with a few modifications based on age group and ability levels. The goal of our games will be to teach the rules, with allowance for appropriate coach and referee modification, in order to support the best possible on-field experience for all players involved.
How much playing time will each player receive?
All players will receive equal or close to equal playing time. Coaches can vary, as to how they choose to substitute players in and out, but they are heavily encouraged to do this in a fair manner for equity of playing time.
Our league puts skill development, team comradery, safety and overall player experience first. We also nurture the thrill of competition and how to be successful in a variety of situations.
Will there be any opportunity for same team requests for friend/family members?
Yes! There will be an option on the registration form, to make friend requests for players wanting to be on the same team. NFL Flag Calgary cannot guarantee that these requests will be granted, but we have a pretty good history of making most of them happen!
Will there be opportunity to choose what NFL jersey and team name my child gets assigned to?
There will be an opportunity during the registration process, to provide a few of your child’s favourite NFL team choices. However, there is no guarantee that they will be placed on that team. All teams are made based on age and ability levels first. Then friend requests are considered, followed by team names being chosen.

All efforts will be made to make up any cancelled games, depending on field availability.
Why choose NFL Flag over other local flag football leagues?
